How to find and fix duplicate SKUs and barcodes in Shopify
Two variants with the same code look fine in Shopify until a scanner or a stock count picks the wrong one.
Why duplicates matter
- Shopify POS finds the first product with a scanned barcode, which may not be the item in your hand.
- Stock counts and reports by SKU merge two different variants.
- Marketplaces and feeds may reject listings that share a GTIN.
How duplicates happen
- A product is duplicated in Shopify and the copy keeps the original codes.
- A CSV import repeats rows or codes.
- A SKU pattern removes size numbers, so 2XL and 3XL both become XL.
- Two people add codes by hand without a shared list.
Find them
Shopify has no built-in duplicate report. You can export products and sort the SKU and barcode columns in a spreadsheet, which works for small stores. SGT's duplicate finder scans every variant in your store and groups the ones that share a SKU or a barcode.
Fix them
- Decide which variant keeps the code. SGT keeps the oldest variant's code by default, since it is most likely already on labels.
- Give the others new codes from your pattern or GS1 prefix, one group at a time or all at once.
- Reprint labels for the variants that changed.
Stop them coming back
- Include option values and a counter in your SKU pattern.
- Do not remove numbers from sizes.
- Use auto-generate for new products, so codes come from one source.

Common questions
Does Shopify warn about duplicate SKUs?
No. Shopify accepts the same SKU or barcode on many variants without a warning.
Will fixing duplicates change my existing labels?
Only the variants that get a new code need new labels. The variant that keeps its code is unchanged.
